Biography

Professor Lesley Rhodes is Director of the Photobiology Unit and Honorary Consultant Dermatologist at the University of Manchester School of Medicine and Salford Royal Foundation Hospital , Manchester.  Current appointments include President-Elect, European Society for Photobiology; Emeritus Editor Photoderm, Photoimmunol, Photomed; Board of the USA Photomedicine Society.  Previously Lead for Epidemiology, Education and Prevention, NCRI Melanoma Clinical Studies Group; Leader, Dermatological Sciences Research Group, University of Manchester; Chair, UK Skin Cancer Working Party; Chair, British Photodermatology Group and Associate Editor, Photochem Photobiol Sci.  She obtained her clinical and research training in Dermatology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitals and University of Liverpool, and the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine, Boston, USA. She runs a supra-regional diagnostic service in photosensitivity disorders and  photodynamic therapy for skin cancer treatment. Her research programme focuses on the mechanisms of visible and ultraviolet radiation effects on the skin, and includes inflammation, vitamin D synthesis, photodynamic therapy, photosensitivity disorders and the development of photoprotection including dietary and hormonal measures. She has >130 publications with the majority as first or last author: >90 original manuscripts and >35 commentaries, reviews and book chapters. Research funding includes BBSRC, Cancer Research UK, AICR, The BUPA Foundation, The Wellcome Trust, European Union and the British Skin Foundation.
